ABOUT DEPRESSION AND HEALTH

Most of us have struggled with something. Managing weight, addictions of one form or another, anxiety, lack of purpose or fulfillment, low self-esteem, and poor relationships are just some of the things that many of us have battled since childhood, with little or no improvement. Many of the things we struggle with are the result of or lead to depression. According to the National Institutes of Mental Health(NIMH), 6.7% of the overall population experienced a major depressive episode in 2015, with higher percentages in young adults and women. Depression continues to be the leading cause of medical disability in the United States and Canada, accounting for nearly 10 percent of all medical disability (www.nimh.nih.gov).

Depression can hurt and affect EVERY area of your life and according to the NIMH, depression is more than mental. Physical symptoms such as joint pain, limb pain, gastrointestinal problems, sleep disturbances, and appetite problems also will occur because of depression. Even coordination and strength declines can be caused by depression. The resulting pain can trigger more depression and life becomes a two way street of depression, physical symptoms from depression, depression from the pain, and more pain. Long term effects of depression include memory and brain function decline, heart disease, and a weak immune system, which leads to other diseases. While it is normal to experience sadness due to life events, continuing depression has severe health consequences. This is not a judgment of you as a person or saying that depression is “wrong.” Most of us struggle or have struggled with something in our lives. It is of vital importance to address depression and learn how to manage it in a healthy way. I have suffered from severe depression since childhood so I know how hard this is to do. As someone who has learned how to manage depression, I can tell you that it is possible and new science backs me up. In the coming days and weeks, I am going to share how myself and others are recovering from depression to live a complete and fulfilled life. To be happy and fulfilled is healthy.BE YOUR OWN MIRACLE!
