I often share the amazing weight loss stories that occur as people transform into healthier lives. These stories are awesome and motivational for many but there is more to lifestyle transformation than just weight loss. People are also learning to manage depression, anxiety, anger, and addictions through exercise. Others are overcoming back problems, bone degeneration associated with aging, and gaining strength as they age instead of getting weaker. One such person is Patty. Faced with an Osteopenia diagnosis, Patty decided to really begin focusing on her health as she reached her 60th birthday and began to take the action necessary to improve her bone strength and overall health. In the two years that has passed Patty has improved her overall strength levels and recent tests show positive results with her bones. At the beginning of 2015, Patty relayed to me that this is the first New Year where her resolutions did not involve food or weight loss. She had reached her goals in 2014 and maintained them! She has learned and maintained healthy nutrition and exercise habits and has gained physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual strength.  Her goal now is to continue to get stronger and grow and I know she will do it! Ways to Help Manage Unhealthy Cravings

The way the brain and body work together is such a complicated process. There are so many things involved in the choices you make whether healthy or unhealthy. How you agree to believe, the way you began to cope and see life early on, your genetics, hormones, neurotransmitters, liver, gastrointestinal tract, and environments are some of the things that help you to make health choices on a daily basis. What you crave in moments of stress, sadness, anger, and reward are much more than just a simple mental choice. If it were that easy we all would be able to make the right one and we would have a healthy planet. Your body, brain, emotions, conditioning, and autopilot coping skills go into the choice. They all work together to create the cravings you experience and the choices you make with your health. For many of us who continue to make choices we wish to change there is hope. There are many example of people who experienced change despite years of struggle.  I have witnessed hundreds of people over the years change everything from hardcore food and drug addictions to unhealthy cravings of love. Here is what I have learned from both the people I have witnessed and the research I have conducted on eliminating unhealthy cravings in your life. This includes food, drugs and alcohol, sex, shopping, and more.

Managing The Cravings

  1. Take responsibility for everything. If you are an adult it is so important to be responsible. Many of us experienced trauma, loss, and other severe negative events as youth. I understand sadness and self-pity believe me. I am so sorry if you experienced abuse or trauma in your youth but to continue to give energy to self-pity will only help you to crave unhealthy things. Get professional help if you need. Take responsibility for your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health and the way that you respond to life TODAY. Stay present, see the good in your life more than the bad, and be willing to go through the discomfort of growth for your overall better health. Today is all that matters. Be responsible.
  2. Be prepared. If you know that you crave things that are not the best for your health, preparation is a key to managing the craving. Having healthy food and water available, a place where you can take a break for five to ten minutes, strong support, intentional distractions, positive affirmations, and other methods in place when you have unhealthy cravings will help you. The key is to recognize the unhealthy craving as soon as possible. Replace the unhealthy craving immediately with healthy food, water, exercise, positive emotion (something that makes you smile, thankful, or peaceful), contact your support if necessary, and distract yourself with work, projects at home, pleasurable activities etc. Be prepared and stay connected with yourself to change.
  3. Give Up Guilt. Many of us were taught by religion, parents, teachers, and others to feel guilty about the choices we make. As I have stated, making a choice is very complicated, especially for those who struggle. While the need to address your unhealthy choices should take priority immediately, it is more important to learn from your “mistakes” than to feel guilty about them. If you feel guilty about the choice you will create the multiple layer process of the unhealthy craving. Learn and make the healthier choice next time.
  4. Keep fighting but fight for the right cause. Fighting against the craving will only lead you to give into the craving. Willpower is a limited resource. When you have an unhealthy craving immediately give thought, energy, and focus to what your health goal is for the day. The quicker you can change the mindset to being successful versus fighting against the craving the quicker you will be able to manage the craving. Stay focused on only today and fight for your success!

So much goes into why we crave unhealthy things and make the choices we make. Please begin to move toward making healthier choices for yourself, your future, and for those who care about you. Change Your Lifelong Struggles In Life

It has been a topic of discussion recently in the gym the importance of early life conditioning and how it impacts belief systems, health choices, and almost every aspect of our lives. Many of us became what we saw and heard through family, neighborhood, culture, religious affiliations, and media. What we “locked into” early in life combined with what we were “hardwired” for genetically make it a struggle to change for many. Making the healthiest food choices, maintaining positive emotion when faced with challenges, utilizing healthy coping tools, and being nonjudgmental of ourselves and others is not something many of us grew up practicing. If you have been taught to make wise and healthy choices I hope you continue to for life. For the rest of us, overcoming our early life conditioning and unhealthy coping skills is a difficult task for sure. If you have ever wondered why you continue to practice behaviors despite guilt, poor health, and other unhealthy consequences you understand how hard change can be. But PLEASE believe me change can be! I see the changes occur every day as people let go of the past and move toward a future that is healthy, happy, and fulfilled. It takes recognition without judgment, determination without resentment, and resiliency without end. If you do not try you will never succeed. Depression, Anger, and Your Health

Most of us are aware of how things like heavy drug or alcohol use and overeating affect the brain and body. Whether it is food, cigarettes, too much whiskey, or your medicines you are being affected in a negative way if you overindulge (as we know). But did you also know that being angry for too long, staying depressed for extended periods, and regular episodes of anxiety also have a HUGE effect on your brain and your body. You are literally causing yourself brain damage, physical damage, and limiting how high you can function on a daily basis. We are humans (most of us) who experience emotion in response to events both past and present in life. “Too much stress on the chain and it will eventually break” is what I heard once in a presentation. The same is true for your brain and your body. Scientists are discovering more and more how stress, depression, anger, and anxiety affects the whole body system. The way you think, the way your organs function, even joint or muscle pain is directly impacted by the way you perceive the world and respond to events in your life. I have suffered and watched many family members suffer with multiple addictions, anger problems, severe depression, ADHD, and low self-esteem just to name a few things. I have also suffered and watched family suffer from weight issues, heart problems prematurely, blood pressure, cancers, intestinal problems, back pain, and other physical ailments. All are directly correlated.

Turning It Around

Thankfully I have seen myself and hundreds of others change from struggling with maintaining physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health to highly functioning, happy, strong, and healthy people.  Of course it was not easy. The meds don’t work for this part. Here are some of the things that I have observed from those who have and continue to make major change.

  1. They stop creating barriers. I have more than one client that has reached significant health goals despite being physically disabled. They quit focusing on what they can’t do and began to focus on what they can.
  2. They recognize that they need to take action. Though most seek out help and support they quit blaming anything or anyone for where they are. They take 100% responsibility for everything.
  3. They exercise. Whether it is the person trying to lose weight, manage depression, overcome addictions or calm themselves when anxious it is necessary for your body and brain to experience exertion in a physical way. You naturally can balance things, go through discomfort which is great for personal growth, and begin to open areas of blood flow to the brain and body that create a higher functioning individual.
  4. They changed the way they talk to themselves and listened to others. Many of us go through life making justifications as to why we do not succeed or continue to have the same demons that have always plagued us. The people that I have observed make significant change became more in tune with the talk they had with themselves and how they “made it okay” to not change. Please observe how you are talking yourself out of being successful in your goals. Believe that you can because others have and you have the ability to go through what you need to acquire the change you seek. And listen to others openly who can help you.
  5. They kept fighting for the change. Resilience and persistence have been the key for acquiring change for centuries. Keep fighting and NEVER GIVE UP your goal of being healthy and happy.

You literally can overcome any health issue that you have created. Weight issues, depression, diabetes, anxiety, ADHD, and addictions can be a part of your past. Happiness and great health are a part of your future. Begin today to BE YOUR OWN MIRACLE!

I work with people on a regular basis who are 100% dissatisfied in life. Health, finances, happiness, and relationships are on the list of things most are seeking to grow and change in.  A lot of recent research is showing how all are directly correlated and impact each other in a very big way. Health is impacted by all of them. If we struggle financially, emotionally, and in relationships we will have more disabilities. We will experience more overall aches and pains, more depression, more anxiety, more memory disorders, more addictions, and create more negative impacts on ourselves and others. How much you exercise, how you set boundaries with yourself and others, how you see life, how much you smile and laugh, and how you accept the imperfections of others will be the determining factors in how most of us will age physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Choosing a healthy lifestyle physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually will be the only way to lessen the impact of aging and minimize the disabilities. And if you are in your 20’s 30’s, or 40’s please remember that what you do today will impact you later.  I and the others who have and are seeking change thought we were invincible also. We unfortunately weren’t. Whatever the age, whatever you have been through, whatever barriers you have to achieving great health, happiness, and quality of life can be changed. I have witnessed so many people achieve great change at any age and finally be who they deserved to be. I am thankful that I went through the discomfort to change. I hope you do too if you would like to improve the areas of your life that create great health, happiness, and high functioning quality of life. Please do all that you can on a daily basis to:

  • exercise vigorously (your level)
  • maintain boundaries with food and drink
  • create happiness and fulfillment
  • compliment and help others
  • continue to learn from life and books
  • spend wisely
  • love a lot

All of this will require responsibility on your part. Please be responsible for the way you move forward in your life. Please manage your health in a way that will keep you strong physically, happy and fulfilled emotionally, active and engaging mentally, and at peace spiritually. There is a ton of great research showing the traits of those who live healthy, strong, clear, high functioning, and happy as they age. For some, the traits were for life and for others the traits came later into adulthood. You can be healthy and start at any age. Here are some of the traits that research is showing of people who live healthy and happy for years:

  1. They all exercise vigorously. Going for a stroll is nice. A power walk, jog, intense bike ride or circuit training is more beneficial for physical, mental, and emotional health. Vigorously does not mean crazy however. Some of the high risk exercise programs will lead to more time on the sidelines due to injury than you will exercising. Stay focused, stay smart, keep moving forward.
  2. They all set boundaries with food and drink. Learning to manage food intake is vital for long term great health. The people who live healthy for decades still will enjoy an ice cream on Saturday night but eat smaller and foods that are made at home. They also will have a drink on occasion but do not overindulge EVER. If you struggle with alcohol addiction abstinence is the best option.
  3. They all express and feel gratitude. It is healthier to see the good things that we have in life. Nothing or no one is ever perfect. If you have expectations of perfection you will be disappointed. The healthiest people express and feel sincere gratitude for the people, the beauty, and the events that lead to growth and fulfillment. See and surround yourself with good. Be thankful, be healthy, and be happy.
  4. They all try to make a day brighter. This could be anything from a sincere compliment to a coworker to helping someone in the spur of the moment to scheduled volunteer service. People who live healthy physically also live healthy mentally and emotionally. Get out of yourself!
  5. They all move forward in life. The healthiest people accept past events, make peace with whatever happened in the past, take responsibility for the way they respond and no longer blame their victimizers or anyone else for the choices they make. Self-pity can lead to seriously unhealthy justifications. Please move forward.
  6. They all learn and study. Educating yourself about yourself and learning things you are interested in are great for your health. Learn about your own behavioral traits, genetic predispositions, coping skills, etc. for personal growth. Learn about subjects that interest and challenge you for intellectual and educational improvement. Keep the brain working, keep learning, stay healthy!

There are always exceptions to everything. It is obviously not wise to smoke for your health. Wherever you are in your health journey please try to incorporate the traits of others who live healthy, happy, and fulfilled. I struggled for the first 35 years of my life and learned how to stop and now watch others overcome things they once thought were insurmountable or impossible to change. You too can live long, be strong, and be happy. You too can BE YOUR OWN MIRACLE!
