Our Parents Did The Best They Could

For generations I have watched my family and I struggle with many different things. One hundred and sixty (160) years is as far as I have gone back so far and found the same result. Addictions, impulsiveness, depression, and other unhealthy practices appear to be the norm for every generation on both my mom and dad’s sides of the family. Every generation has been extremely talented, bright and for the most part kind and generous. We have also coped with life in ways that were not healthy, made severely poor decisions, and have been selfish with the way that we have treated ourselves and others. It has been a difficult journey at times for those of us in my family who have struggled with the knowing that there is a different way to conduct a life than what we have agreed to through our early life teaching. I speak to people daily in every age demographic who struggle with what they were conditioned to be through early life teaching, genetics, and what they have agreed to as belief systems. I also witness people on a daily basis learn how to overcome the hand that they have been dealt with both teaching and genetics and live a full, happy, and healthy life. Here is what I have learned from the successful ones:

  1. They all accepted 100% responsibility for everything. This does not mean that they shamed themselves or allowed others to. All merely quit blaming any parental, social, and/or religious teachings and genetic barriers. They quit giving energy to the hand they were dealt and began to only focus on becoming successful in the change they were seeking.
  2. They all found support that promoted personal growth, lack of judgment, and love. Many of us (me included) for years have responded defensively, felt shamed or become anxious when someone has tried to provide feedback that will help us. It is so important to be open to QUALIFIED PEOPLE who can help us acquire the skills to achieve the change that we are seeking. This can be a friend, family member, professional therapist, fitness trainer, or anyone who can teach you to discover your way to goal achievement. The mentors and support that you choose are not responsible for your success just as the parents before you, those who criticize you or anyone else is responsible for your failure. Be open, learn, forgive yourself and others, and move forward.
  3. They all kept fighting for what they wanted to change. The easy and comfortable way is to always go back to the way we were taught and agreed to. From what I have witnessed from myself and others is that to continue to do things that you know are not in your best interests is to continue to feel guilty, unfulfilled, and miserable. To do so will impact your health severely.

Keep fighting for the change that you are seeking in your life! Manage and enjoy nutrition with boundaries, exercise vigorously several times per week based on where you are, create pleasure and fulfillment, and KEEP MOVING FORWARD NO MATTER WHAT! Learn from those who have preceded you, your own yesterdays that have preceded you, and achieve the health, happiness, and high quality of life you seek no matter the hand you were dealt. Trying To Impress May Leave You Depressed!

It is so impressive to watch some of the high risk and heavy lifts that people are doing in the more extreme type of fitness training. While it is important to exercise in a vigorous manner it is just as important to exercise in a smart manner. There are a lot of people doing these high risk lifts and earning PR’s (personal records) and just as many if not more are earning long term injuries. I watched a video of a very well-known trainer setting a PR in a high risk lift and obviously straining tremendously to do it. He received several thousand “likes” and I wonder how many people will try to do what he did today and end up hurt and unable to do anything in the long term.

Smart But Vigorous

For most of us, especially those of us over 35, the goal should be to create long term positive health practices, happiness, and fulfillment. All are intertwined and necessary to have long term high quality of life. The research says that we should exercise vigorously, enjoy food but have boundaries with it, engage in activities that bring us pleasure and fulfillment, and have a positive outlook to live a long and healthy life. It is true that we should be strong as we can be (especially as we age) but not to the point of high risk. I know many that have exercised and lifted in ways that brought injury and they cannot do as much in their 40’s and 50’s as someone who maintained a healthy fitness approach. Please exercise regularly in a vigorous BUT SMART manner. Listen to your body and not your ego. Stay as strong as you can physically. Give energy ONLY to being successful in all that you do. Learn from things you need to improve in. Do things that make you smile and feel fulfilled. Focus on the good in all. Be healthy for decades. BE YOUR OWN MIRACLE!

Judging Yourself?

I so love the clients of Miracle of Phoenix. They are each on their own journey of health and for some the journey is easier than others. It is so important to continue the journey though. I speak to people regularly who are discouraged because they cannot seem to stay on track with healthy food and exercise habits. Some judge themselves extremely harshly for having a common human struggle and they really are great people. There are many reasons for this including conditioning as a youth by themselves and others. When you judge yourself harshly you find yourself guilty nearly every time. This will never lead to long term success if you are trying to create a new and healthier lifestyle for yourself with exercise and nutrition. It can only be discouraging and you will continue to struggle to stay on track. So how do you get past the judgmental conditioning that is so “locked in” when you do not meet your expectations of a perfect weight loss or wellness plan and you get discouraged? Here is what I have found through both client and data study:

  1. Understand how powerful the agreements you have made with your conditioning are! Our first 20 years of life are so vital for belief systems and habits. To change it is important to understand that you were conditioned and agreed to judge yourself harshly, get discouraged, and give up. I meet a lot of people who have been doing this for decades. I also meet a lot of people who change this IN A BIG WAY! The people who change are willing to give full energy to change the conditioning they have agreed to and create great health and quality of life because they deserve and desire it. You must desire change!
  2. Be willing to go through discomfort to get to the mountaintop! Change is not easy. Keep working through tough points and you will get better at it. Judging yourself and getting discouraged may have been the norm but did not work for you. Question and/or dispute self-judgment and instead focus on how you can improve daily. Learn from days when you could be better and realize that you are a great person who is learning how to be healthier in every way. Drive yourself toward success and leave failure thoughts behind.
  3. Focus on daily tasks not long term goals! There are many wonderful things about sunrises and sunsets. They are beautiful to see and they also give us an automatic do over daily. If you just focus on what you need to do today with your lifestyle choices you will be successful in your long term goals. If you have a day where you do not reach the goal you have set for food and exercise please start over the next day. Judging yourself harshly will lead to discouragement. Moving on and finding a way to be successful the following day will be gratifying and growth if you have given up historically.

I hope this help you if you have been struggling in any way. If I can help you, your company or other organization in any way be healthier please email me: miraclesfitness@gmail.com. We have lifestyle education classes and support discussions every Wednesday that can help you to stay on track with health habits. Please join us! BE YOUR OWN MIRACLE!

Struggle to Maintain an Exercise Commitment?

I meet a lot of people who struggle to maintain an exercise commitment.  Some have been damaged because of an egotistical PE teacher or coach, others have been in the military and had a terrible exercise experience, and some are intimidated by gyms and lack the proper knowledge to workout with confidence in a gym setting. Here are some keys to learning how to manage a negative exercise association:

1. Understand that the coach, drill instructor, or teacher inflicting unnecessary pain and misery during exercise is not the healthiest method to approach exercise. There may be some discomfort when you exercise but do not go overboard. Utilize the mild discomfort to form stronger coping skills without creating absolute misery.

2. See exercise as beneficial. If you see exercise as beneficial rather than as a punishment you will experience better results. What happens to the body physically when you see something as good is far more healthy than what happens to the body when you experience a negative outlook. Be aware that you may have allowed yourself to be conditioned by a coach or someone that did not teach you how to have a positive exercise outlook and experience. Forgive them, exercise at your own pace and see the benefits.

3. Have nonjudgmental support. Support is so important! Have someone in your life who can support you in your commitment to being healthy. The more the merrier. Do not get discouraged because someone does not support you-focus on those who do.

4. Stay resilient. The key to everything. If you have a bad day or even two, get right back on the exercise program. Finding a way to get it done versus finding a way not to get it done will be a strong key to maintaining your exercise commitment.  BE YOUR OWN MIRACLE!

Be YOUR Own Healthy Life!

It has been a few weeks since I have shared research, experience, and opinions with you. It is not like I did not have something to share as I always study and rarely have little to say as some of you know (Can I lol on a blog?). In fact, I have learned more about life and health in the final 60 days of 2014 than I did in the previous 305. As you are aware, I believe in living a healthy life mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. ALL are interrelated and care of each one is vital to being healthy in all of them. I have spent the last four years studying what makes a person healthy and strong for decades and the last year writing about it. The final two months of 2014 were very challenging but so educational from a health perspective for me and in the coming days I will share what I have learned.

Lesson One: My Dog

Although I am genius in every other way (lol again), I am not mechanically inclined. We can discuss that later but my issue today is my dog’s harness. Every morning as I would prepare to take Zeus out for his run, I would try to figure out the engineering of the harness and often put it on wrong, leaving him looking like a weirdly harnessed wiener (he’s a wiener dog). It would still do the job and he was safe but as the mornings passed my frustration grew and began to turn into anxiety every time I put the harness on him. I could see it was affecting Zeus and could feel it was affecting me. The first 35 years of my life when things became hard my first inclination was to quit or give up. I took jobs that were conforming and cultivated relationships that did not challenge me to grow. If it was hard I quit. And this time with the harness I did the same thing. I quit. Called the harness stupid and threw it on the ground…. And then I picked it up and calmly, placed it on Zeus properly and went for a run. Did a lightning bolt come and strike me and I became a MIT engineer and was able to figure out the stupid harness? No I learned what I often teach and here is what it is:

  1. I have conditioned myself since early childhood how to respond to stress. I now recognize my autopilot and even genetic responses and now quickly alter the talk within myself to a healthier one. From a health perspective, anxiety, racing and ruminating thoughts are not good for us physically. Calm is healthier. Change the talk within yourself and learn how to manage autopilot responses for a healthier overall life.
  2. External things do not control internal responses. Zeus is anxious and I would try and try to calm him. When I became responsible for the healthchoice of calming my panic, he also calmed. We can never control external events or people but we can control the way we respond. Know that if you are internally connected to what is healthy you will not allow what is externally unhealthy to bother you for too long. Learn to recognize that you are in control.
  3. Understand that what we do affects others. I was making Zeus more nervous as I became crazier with the harness from hell. Everything we do from a health perspective affects those around us. If it is getting overly emotional, eating unhealthy foods, not exercising, or failing to address things that affect our health negatively it will eventually affect someone you love. Address your mental, physical, and emotionally unhealthy practices for someone you love!
  4. It is okay to be uncomfortable. In order to get that harness on Zeus I had to let go of the comfort I had with giving up easily when things were hard. It is an automatic response for me and easy to do. When I am open to “working through” tough points in any area of life it helps me work through the tough points in other areas. KEEP TRYING!

All of the above things helped me be healthier. By taking responsibility for my health choices, changing my self-talk, recognizing that I affect others, and staying resilient I am now able to calmly run with Zeus. I am also able to calmly work my way through unhealthy food cravings, trying to talk myself out of exercise, having a negative outlook toward life, and justifying things that do not serve my health. It is healthy to be happy, calm, and fulfilled in life. Exercise. Take responsibility for physically unhealthy negative emotions. Eat to serve your health. BE YOUR OWN MIRACLE!

The Build YOUR Healthy Life Program will be released January 12th. I am so excited.
